The River Lugg

Riverside Inn beat, Aymestrey

This was new water to me. The start of the day was not auspicious. I had forgotten my waders; definitely a case of senility. In addition it was raining. But the water was clear and river, as it rolled past the delightful Riverside Inn, looked lovely. The Inn had a spare pair of waders and so the day was saved.

I was fishing with Anthony Wilson, and he kindly showed me the beat and gave lots of needed help. The fishing was wonderful. There were small olives coming off along with tiny midges and the occasional stonefly, and the fish were up for it. I caught a good number of fish. The most memorable was one lying tight against the steep earthen bank and under an overhanging branch. A cast 5 yards upstream might drift the dry fly to the awaiting fish. The suspense was exquisite. The fly landed hard up against the far bank and the current carried it under the branches and to the feeding fish. It obliged, and was quickly caught and released.

This section of the Lugg is a lovely mixture of slow deep pools and meanders through meadows, combined with fast rocky sections. All very fishy water. The river, the weather that improved in the afternoon and the company of Anthony made for a memorable day.
